Secret Garden Café

Off the beaten path but worth the find

When used together, the words secret and hidden are even more compelling. Both adjectives describe Garden Café well, but if we had to use one more word … green is it.

Situated in a quiet East Dallas neighborhood, the quaint café opened its doors seven years ago.

It’s one of the first restaurant’s to have embraced the slow food movement long before it was trendy to talk about locally sourced ingredients.

“We were a part of the slow food/green foods movement a long time ago. We are all organic, and don’t use any pesticides of course,” said owner Dale Wooton.

Diners can sit on the patio and gaze at the very herbs used in the food they’re eating. Fuchsia beets are pulled from the dirt, cleaned, cut and then served in full-flavored beet salads.

Guests can even ask to cut their own asparagus for a breakfast omelet. The asparagus and corn grow in two separate plots in the parking lot.

“It’s country in the city and you have the cooking to go along with it,” said Jennifer Styers, whose favorite entrée is the chicken and dumplings.

Garden Café has a dog permit so that pet owners can enjoy the weather with their four-legged friends.

Hard to find, but well worth the drive, Garden Café offers a dining experience unlike any other in the city. It’s a place where nature and nutrition are hand in hand.

A café where children are encouraged to learn about the environment and adults can take a break, relax and recharge in Mother Earth’s green surroundings.

Cauliflower soup is a great way to get your cruciferous veggies. Gourmet Yourself here for the recipe.
