Sansom Park Police Write ‘Tickets for Tots'

Police officers in Sansom Park are spreading some holiday cheer to drivers who may have been naughty.

For the next month, some drivers pulled over in the North Texas suburb could avoid being cited. Instead, Officer Daniel Martinez said they'll be given a "ticket for tots."

The "ticket for tots" encourages drivers to drop off a $10 toy at the Sansom Park police station.

"This is a low-income community. A lot of the kids are not going to have a Christmas at all," Martinez told Dallas-Fort Worth television station KTVT.

While it's not mandatory to donate a toy, police think forgoing writing drivers a ticket could lead people to return the kindness.

Officers have discretion on who gets issued a citation or "ticket for tots" depending on the violation.

Police point out that the average traffic ticket in Sansom Park costs a driver about $165.

Sansom Park is a Fort Worth suburb.
