Plano Ice Cream Shop Scoops Up Top Award

Henry's Homemade Ice Cream wins best new flavor

You might say that Henry’s Homemade Ice Cream is pretty good at licking the competition.

The Plano-based ice cream vendor took top honors for best new flavor at the National Ice Cream Awards.

“This year, we took first place with Butterscotch Blast,” owner Henry Gentry said.

Henry’s also took second place at the national awards in Florida for best homemade vanilla and best strawberry flavors.

“There’s nothing that sells like an ice cream cone, and it’s pure, great ice cream,” Gentry said.

The secret  is using a 16 percent butter-fat mix, he said.

But his most loyal customers just care about the product.

“I’m not really sure, but it tastes great,” said Skip Brown, a loyal customer of several years.

Gentry has been making and selling ice cream for 26 years.

“Some people have called us a Plano institution; yes, especially after all these years," Gentry said.

Henry’s also sells ice cream to more than 550 restaurants and vendors around the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
