Pit Bull and Other Breed Bans Could Be Next Dog Fight

The next legislative session in Austin could turn out to be a real dog fight. Literally.

Lawmakers will consider the question of whether counties and cities have the power to impose bans on certain breeds of dogs, such as Rottweilers and Pit Bulls, the Star-Telegram reported today.

Lame duck Rep. Tony Goolsby of Dallas has asked Attorney General Greg Abbott to clarify whether municipalities have the power to impose restrictions on certain breeds of dogs.

Last session, lawmakers passed a bill that would hold owners responsible when their dogs injure or kill somebody, but breed-specific legislation did not go anywhere.

But the breed-specific legislation is a sleeping dog that probably won't be left to lie as Watauga, Grapevine and other North Texas towns have to do deal with violent dog-related incidents.
