I really can’t say I’m a big fan of William Shakespeare. I always found his stuff a bit too flowery and hard to follow. I’m more a Dr. Seuss guy when it comes to rhyming stories.
On the other hand, I do enjoy outdoor events such as concerts at the Dallas Arboretum and the Shakespearean performances staged annually at the Samuell-Grand Amphitheatre.
Events likes those, when you can bring in a blanket, some food, and a cooler full of libations, kind of remind me of the passage, “a loaf of bread, a jug of wine, and thou,” except that’s not Shakespeare … I don’t particularly care for wine … I’d probably bring fried chicken … and there’s no “thou” in my immediate future. Sigh.
Anyway, Shakespeare in the Park -- brought to the outdoor stage by Shakespeare Dallas -- returns June 16 with a performance of “Cymbeline” at 8:15 p.m., June 16, at the amphitheatre.Tickets throughout the series cost $10.
That show and one the following night -- same time, in fact all performances begin at 8:15 p.m., same place -- serve as previews with the curtain going up on the regular series June 18 and running Sundays, Tuesdays, and Saturdays, June 29-July 24, with additional performances June 19-20, speaking of confusing.
“The Comedy of Errors” comes up next with preview performances June 24-25, opening night June 26, and its regular run Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, June 30-July 23. There is an additional performance here as well, this time on June 27.
The series closes with “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” playing Sept. 22-26 and Sept. 29-Oct. 2 at the amphitheatre and moving to Addison Circle Park for performances Oct. 6-10 and Oct. 13-17. These final performances begin promptly at 8 p.m.
Dear God, Shakespeare’s stuff is easier to follow than that schedule.
