Now Renting: Kayaks, Canoes on White Rock Lake

For the first time in about 15 years, you can rent kayaks and canoes on White Rock Lake. Two good friends saw the opportunity and decided to start their own business.

On the northeast shore of the lake near the Mockingbird bridge, you'll find a new way to spend a morning or afternoon. Amy Ebert and Angeline Koh noticed a lack of businesses on the lake offering watercraft rentals and started the White Rock Paddle Co. last month.

"I have grown up around the water. I have been on the lake since I was a kid in some sort of boat. Any way I could get on the water, I just love being out on the water," Ebert, of Dallas, said. "We were shocked but saw the opportunity, but we were right. There's definitely an opportunity here."

Ebert quit her job in corporate America and got Koh to invest in their new venture.

"This is something that needed to happen," Koh said. "I'm still an engineer by day. I love my job. And this is just something for me to do on the weekends."

And it seems like the dogs love going out on the water as much as the humans do.

"It was fun. We just went up the channel 'cause it was so windy and saw some geese and birds and fish jump," Clint Westhoff, of Plano, said after kayaking with his son, Dillan, 8.

White Rock Paddle Co. offers group and private lessons, as well as corporate team building exercises.
