Denton’s four-day music festival 35 Conferette kicked off last night with help from Cut Chemist, Slobberbone, Sarah Jaffe, White Denim, and a host of other kick bands. But Gospel singer and Staples Sister Mavis Staples seemed to steal everyone else's thunder judging by tweets deeming her "phenomenal."
The folks running the show agreed: “If you're missing Mavis, you ain't conferettin' right.” And lead singer for the rock 'n' roll band Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights added: “I think I just rededicated my life to Jesus. Ha! #savedbymavis”
In the middle of “I’ll Take You There,” the singer broke into another popular song for one of the festival's staffers. Shortly afterward, someone tossed a “Keep Denton Beard” shirt on stage.
