Man Shot After Breaking Into Officer's House, Police Say

Officer opens fire on would-be burglars.

An off-duty Dallas police officer shot a man who broke into his home in the 3000 block of Alma Road Tuesday afternoon, Richardson police said.

Police said the off-duty officer was awakened by a loud crashing sound. He discovered two men inside his apartment and fired several shots. At least one round struck one of the men, police said.

One man fled through the front door, and the other man escaped through a window, investigators said.

A man suffering from a gunshot wound was taken to Medical City Hospital a short time later and was taken into surgery. There was no word on the extent of the man's injuries or his condition.

Police said they arrested the man who brought the injured man to the hospital on unrelated charges and are questioning him.

Police said the two men have not been positively identified as being involved in the break-in.

The officer was not injured.
