Man Accidentally Shoots, Kills Girlfriend, Witness Says

Boyfriend charged with manslaughter, possession of narcotics.

Dallas police arrested a man who, a witness said, accidentally shot his girlfriend as he was trying to demonstrate how to use a handgun.

The shooting happened Thursday at about 3 a.m. in the 2900 block of Ruidosa Avenue in northeast Dallas.

A witness told police that Chase Barton, 22, was trying to show his girlfriend, Katrina Alverez-Castro, how to fire a handgun when the gun accidentally fired, striking her in the upper torso.

Alverez-Castro was transported to Baylor Hospital, where she later died.

Police said Barton acted in a wreckless manner, causing the gun to go off. Police said they also found a "sizeable" amount of marijuana in the home.

He was transported to Lew Sterrett Justice Center, where he was charged with manslaughter and possession of narcotics.
