Local Labels Spread the Love

Local designers Shemara Jeyarajah and Henry Coleman are set to show their Fall collections during a major bash at the Fairmont Hotel.

The runway show, produced by fashion icon Jan Strimple, is part of the North Texas Thyroid Awareness Foundation's gala, which will mark the new philanthropy's official debut.

Jeyarajah's label, Shemara Couture, specializes in gorgeous cocktail pieces perfect for a Dallas date night, and Coleman's line, Distinctive Attire, is the epitome of luxury men's wear, offering beautiful bespoke suits.

We were lucky enough to catch up with both talented clothiers recently, and they shared the inside scoop on their current collections and why the NTTAF is close to their hearts.

NBCDFW: What inspired the looks you'll be sending down the runway during the upcoming gala?

Jeyarajah:  "My collection is inspired by my trip to Sri Lanka this summer.  I was born there but had not been back for years.  The fabrics, colors and textures were incredible and I brought back several sarees to cut up and design new western pieces.  Definitely an east meets west sensibility."

Coleman: "Definitely a 1930's sensibility was a key influence for Fall."

NBCDFW: What are your favorite pieces from your Fall collection?

Jeyarajah: "I get inspired by beautiful fabrics and the pieces made out of the sarees are some of my favorites."

Coleman: "My suits are definitely my favorite pieces."

NBCDFW: Where can we shop for your fabulous Fall pieces?

Jeyarajah: "I have a custom couture design studio near the design district in Dallas."

Coleman: "My agents for Distinctive Attire can bring the collection to each individual, at their home or office, and appointments can be made via the phone."

NBCDFW: What prompted your involvement with NTTAF?

Jeyarajah: "When I was asked to collaborate in this event, I was happy to to be apart of it, especially having been diagnosed and been treated for thyroid disease for the past 14 years. I can't imagine not being diagnosed, since it affects so many different parts of our bodies and lives."

Coleman: "Having a close friend with thyroid disease influenced me to get involved, and I think the NTTAF is a much needed organization to spread the word about this disease."

To check out Shemara Couture, visit Jeyarajah's website or email the designer directly at Shemara.Fashion@gmail.com; to shop Distinctive Attire, ring Coleman and his team at 469-337-1912.

And to attend the NTTAF gala on September 23, head to the organization's online site for more information; the haute happening will be hosted by Jesse Holley of Dallas Cowboys, meaning it's sure to be a star-studded affair.
