Forty tiny fingers and toes. A Keller couple welcomed a set of quadruplets over the weekend.
"It's surreal," Amber Shawver said.
The quadruplets range from 2 pounds and 5 ounces to 3 pounds and 7 ounces. They were born 10 weeks premature but are doing well.
Getting to this point was not easy. The Shawvers tried having children for three years before turning to a fertility specialist and had a miscarriage on their third round of treatment.
"It was devastating to finally have success and then lose that baby so fast," Shawver said.
Ironically, their fourth try ended with four little heartbeats.
"There's not a lot of words," Shawver said. "You just sit there with a lot of shock."
Shawver spent 10 weeks on bed rest at home before finally being admitted to Texas Health Harris Hospital last week. It took 30 nurses and doctors to deliver and care for the babies when it was finally time to deliver.
"I walked into the doors, and all the nursing team was all staring at me," George Shawver said.
The babies were transferred to Cook Children's Medical Center, a choice the parents made because of the all-private rooms.
"Quads can be there quite a while, so it was important to us that the stay be as easy as possible," Amber Shawver said.
Now, the quads have a team of specialists caring for them, and the Shawvers have plenty of space to be with the babies while they get strong enough to go home, which doctors expect will be in a few months.
