Haute Holiday Decorating

Getting our home holiday ready is our favorite part of the Christmas season, and we can't resist the fusion of fashion and festive decor. We've got five haute tips to help you channel your sense of style into your seasonal decorating.

Feathered Fun: Love marabou or peacock trim on your dresses and skirts, like those from Elizabeth and James? Feathers are also a gorgeous way to achieve luxury holiday style in your home. We adore the use of long, elegant feathers incorporated into a garland or wreath; so easy you don't even have to secure the feathers, just pop them into the greenery and they'll stay put. We've also featured some killer peacock-inspired ornaments and wreaths that can be bought or created easily to feather your holiday nest.

Beyond Brooches: Do you turn classic pins and brooches to dress up and personalize blazers and denim jackets? Use your charming collection of unique pieces to trim the tree. All you need to make this happen is some florists wire and a selection of brooches - you can find them for less than $1 each locally at Dolly Python. Use the wire to hang the brooches from your tree or to incorporate them into tablescapes as napkin rings. We also love the idea of tying brooches to your gifts to make each package that much more special.

Shine On: If you're favorite ensembles inevitably contain a little bit of sparkle, then glittering decorations are just right to make you feel festive. This one's easy as you can find silvery Christmas accessories everywhere. Our picks are the Swarovski ornaments and tree toppers because nothing glows like their crystal pieces, and you can collect their annual, limited edition ornaments for years to come. The most fun version of spangly holiday style is an aluminum tree decorated to the hilt with equally shiny ornaments; Martha Stewart's silver and pink interpretation of this trend is spot on. Buy an aluminum tree anywhere - the version in the gallery is courtesy of Amazon.com - and rock the ornaments of your choice.

Denim Darling: Always choose chic jeans as your go-to style? Denim isn't just for your toned legs anymore; use it to achieve a laid-back but luxe holiday home. The great thing about decorating with denim is that you can recycle your old jeans (or uber-cheap pairs picked up at thrift stores) to create a blue Christmas theme. Our favorite idea now is covering basic, smaller, cone-shaped trees in different shades of rows of denim to make cool table toppers. You don't even have to sew to create them; just the ability to wield scissors and double sided tape or spray on glue. Add denim placemats and napkins - these can also be made from recycled denim pieces - for a great tablescape that mixes well with the reds, plaids, and pewters that are right for the season.

Proper Plaids and Patterns: If you love the Ralph Lauren-inspired rustic plaids in your closet or have a thing for great printed pieces from lines like Marni or Blumarine, consider them the ideal inspiration for your Christmas decor. Those of you mad for plaid will be inspired by Kathie Lee Gifford's tree; she cut up Frank's old tartan shirts and covered cheap ornaments in the fabric, using spray on glue and ribbon to tie the top off. See her tree in our gallery as well as Christmas home accessories from Ralph Lauren that can be instant adds to your holiday decor. If patterns and color are your love, create your own candles with patterned exteriors or steal a page - literally - from Dylan Lauren's book ("Dylan's Candy Bar: Unwrap Your Sweet Life"). She uses swirled candies, lollipops, and multi-colored table accessories to create a festive holiday table.
