Group Wants McDonald's Out of Hospitals

Group wants fast food out of hospitals

Corporate Accountability International says hospitals should "stop fostering a food environment that promotes harm, not health" by closing McDonald's and other fast-food establishments.

The group mailed letters out to more than 20 healthcare centers, including John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, according to the Star-Telegram.

JPS has had a McDonald's location inside the hospital since 1992, but the contract with the fast-food giant expires next year -- and hospital administrators may be looking for changes.

"Since we are a provider of healthcare and we want to make sure that everybody is as healthy as possible, then the menu that has been a traditional McDonald's menu probably won't be something we can continue on with," JPS Chief Executive Robert Earley told the Star-Telegram.

McDonald's responded to the paper, saying that the company has added more choices to the menu and is continuing to develop healthy options.

"As always, we continue to assess our menu and actively engage in dialogue with experts to determine opportunities to offer expanded menu choices and additional information and education that enable our customers to make the choices that are right for them," McDonald's spokeswoman Danya Proud said.

Earley said the goal at JPS will be to offer hospital guests and employees food that is "healthy, affordable and available."
