Get Toasted

Calais Winery has officially announced the launch of its tasting room. Themed wine tasting parties happen every Friday night from 6:30pm-10pm. One of only two local wineries in the Downtown area, Calais Winery has released three wines made on-site. Here’s a break down of what to expect from its Bordeaux "Claret-style" blend, Chardonnay and Cabernet/Syrah blend.

La Cuvée Du Commerce
Exhibits a nose of black currant, blackberry, cedar and vanilla. Its palate is full bodied on flavors of black currant, spice box and roasted coffee. It’s fleshy and long lasting.
Suggested food pairing: grilled red meat, strong cheeses or dark chocolate

La Cuvée Principale
(100% Chardonnay, unoaked, not malolactic)
Exhibits a nice nose with a hint of pineapple, green apple and citrus. The palate is fresh with flavors of orange and lime. It’s a versatile white wine.
Suggested food pairing: smoked salmon, crab cakes, roast salmon, chicken or turkey, Indian/Thai or Chinese cuisine or Mexican food

La Cuvée D’Elme
Exhibits a nose of fruit jam with redcurrant, cherry and raspberry along with a hint of lavender and violet. The palate has a nice balance between raspberry and cherry jam. It offers good structure over a long finish.
Suggested food pairing: Beef or venison stew, mushrooms or aged cheeses

Tasting Dates:
March 13 @ 6:30 p.m.: Blind tasting of varietals
March 20 @ 6:30 p.m.: Argentinean Malbec
March 27 @ 7 p.m.: Sparkling wine and Champagne

During the tastings, owner Benjamin Calais will pour six to seven wines from the winery and outside wines fitting the theme. Prices range from $10-$15.

Inside knowledge to drop when you want to impress: The word cuvée, found on each label, refers to a French term designating a specific batch that aims to create one wine.

Wine education classes about winemaking, varietals, wine styles and various wine regions start in April.
