Joey Gallo keeps taking steps forward in his progress, even with an extended slump mixed in since his promotion to Double-A Frisco.
Despite his insane strikeout-to-walk ratio since his call-up to Frisco, there's one thing no one can say about Gallo, and that's that he doesn't have prodigious power.
There's the viral shots of Gallo's long ball in batting practice at the MLB Futures Game in Minneapolis that shattered the windshield of a pickup truck on the outfield concourse. There's his long home run in the actual MLB Futures Game that gave the American team a win. The list goes on as to his power accolades.
On Sunday night, Gallo crushed his 40th home run of the season, tying him with fellow Las Vegas native and fellow uber prospect Kris Bryant, of the Cubs organization, for the lead in professional baseball. It made Gallo the first minor-leaguer in some 30 years to rack up back-to-back 40-home run seasons.
The crazy thing is, Gallo still leads High-A's Carolina League in home runs with 21, and he's now trailing Corpus Christi's Telvin Nash by just one for the lead in the Texas League with 19. If he can catch Nash and hold on to the Carolina League lead over the next two weeks, he'll make history by leading two separate minor leagues in the same season in homers, something that hasn't been accomplished in the last century.
Gallo has some warts, and what he becomes is still up in the air, but that power? Man, that's something special.
