Five Rules for a Fashionable Fall

Our favorite fashionista's top five must-haves for fall

Fashion can be a cruel mistress.  As Heidi loves to say, “One day you’re in and the next day you’re out!”  Some people, however, have a natural eye for style.  Keeping up with the ever-changing world of design is something they pull off effortlessly, slipping into the latest looks with the ease of a t-shirt and jeans.

Courtney Miller’s like that…and then some.  Author of the popular fashion blog Dry Clean Only NYC, she’s worked behind the scenes at top names like Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and Ralph Lauren.  This Boston-born blonde called Dallas home for a time and now scouts the Big Apple for her next big obsessions.

Today Miller shares her rules for following fashion’s top fall trends.

Take notes – this one’s a keeper.

Five Rules for a Fashionable Fall

1. “Boots, boots, boots!”
From thigh-highs to ankle booties, Miller points out that “boots to the extreme” are hot this fall.  She covets Rodarte’s new bandage-style boots, but also recommends checking out the new (and more affordable) selections from Candela and Dolce Vita.

2.  “Big shoulders – the bigger the better.”
Fall jackets, dresses and tops will all feature this throwback touch.  “Balmain has been promoting this look for quite a while,” Miller explains.  “This season they’re front and center with Givenchy and Jonathan Saunders.”  For budget-friendly shopping, scope the sculpted shoulders at Topshop.

3.  “Chunky necklaces are another huge trend for Fall.”
As with the shoulders, chokers are going big.  Our expert recommends statement necklaces from Banana Republic and Phillip Lim.  We love that this tip is a quick and easy way to update our wardrobe without having to step foot in a dressing room.

4.  “Embellished tights are all the rage.”
Pick tights in prints, brights, sequins – anything but basic black – and pair ‘em with Mary Janes or t-strap heels.  “Check out Fogal, Falke and Anna Sui,” Miller says.  “You can even make your own!”  ...Anyone got a Bedazzler we can borrow?

5.  “Heavy metal glitz and glam.”
Miller’s fave new trend is “reminiscent of the Studio 54 scene” and features over-the-top metallics, lamé and bling.  Just about every label is working this trend into fall collections, so keep and eye out for anything that says “disco diva”.
