Holy $55K Comic Auction, Batman!

The first-ever Batman comic goes to the highest bidder.

The Dark Knight's first daring quest was sold for more than just a pretty penny.

Batman issue #1 sold at a live auction through Dallas-based Heritage Auction Galleries. The rare Batman issue sold for 10 cents back in 1940 and was sold Thursday afternoon for $55,268.75.

Heritage Auction Galleries is the world’s largest collectibles auctioneer headquartered in Dallas with locations in Beverly Hills, Germany, Switzerland, Holland and France.

Mike Wheat, an Alaskan native, was the collector who had the rare comic copy in good condition. Wheat, a retired city wastewater treatment plant operator, had the issue for 36 years and considers the Batman comic an investment but felt it was time to say goodbye to the Dark Knight.

There are believed to be less than 300 copies still in existence, according to the Associated Press.

Along with the first issue, the second and fourth Batman issues were also up for grabs in the auction lot. To join in on the bidding, click here to head to Heritage's auction site.
