Fernie's Funnel Cakes Win The Golden Local

The Golden Local debate over the Best State Fair Food has come to an end with Fernie's Funnel Cake winning with 53 percent of the votes over Fletcher's corny dogs.

Around Town correspondent Annie Potasznik presented the Golden Local trophy to Fernie and the Erpillo family at the State Fair on Tuesday.

"We're excited over this," Fernie said after she got over the surprise presentation of the trophy.

The team behind the sweet state fair staple hoisted the trophy high at The Dock restaurant inside the Embarcadero Building.

"We're the only people out here with one of these." said Fernie's daughter Christi Erpillo.

More than 600 people voted for Fernie's Funnel Cakes and some 50 NBCDFW users left comments on the Golden Local winner.

Fernie's funnel cakes have been a staple of the state fair since the Erpillo family introduced the fried favorite to the fair in the early 80's.

Push unleavened batter through a funnel into the fryer, then sprinkle some powdered sugar and you have a State Fair favorite.

Add some fruit and a dollop of whipped cream (like in the picture above) and you have sweet perfection.

Congratulations to Fernie's Funnel Cakes!
