Marty Turco's awful season continued on Thursday night against Chicago, as the Dallas Stars goalie gave up five goals on 29 shots, as the Stars fell 6-3. After another dismal performance in the crease, Turco finds himself 42nd in the NHL (out of 43) with a 3.67 Goals Against Average, and 43rd with a .867 save percentage. It's difficult to get much worse than that.
Patrick Kane scored a pair of goals for the Blackhawks, giving him ten on the season, while they also received goals from Martin Havlat, Kris Versteeg, Ben Eager and Brian Campbell. Nikolai Khabibulin earned No. 1 start honors in the game, turning aside 31 shots.
With the win, Chicago improves to 9-4-5 on the season, and 8-2-4 since the firing of coach Denis Savard following the fourth game of the season.
The Stars, meanwhile, find themselves near the bottom of the NHL just one year after playing in the Western Conference Finals.
Devils Win Second Straight
As we've mentioned before, it's not exactly been a national secret that the New Jersey Devils have been struggling to win games -- and score goals -- since Martin Brodeur went down with his injury. Well, after scoring six goals in their previous game, the Devils scored a pair of goals in just over a minute on Thursday to beat Florida, 3-1, winning their second game in a row.
Paul Martin and Brian Gionta scored just 62 seconds apart early in the third period, giving New Jersey a commanding 3-0 lead. Michael Frolik scored his first career goal late in the third period for the Panthers only goal of the night.
Scott Clemmensen stopped 23 of 24 shots in the win for New Jersey.
Jiri Hudler Scores Twice as Detroit Holds Off EdmontonThe Red Wings jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in Edmonton on Thursday night, but they had to hold on against a surging Edmonton squad for a 4-3 win. Jiri Hudler scored a pair of goals for Detroit, while Pavel Datsyuk and Tomas Kopecky picked up goals in the win.
Edmonton goalie Dwayne Roloson was lifted from the game following the first period, after giving up three goals on just ten shots. Mathieu Garon took over and stopped 24 of 25 shots in relief.
With the Detroit leading 4-1 in the third, the Oilers picked up two goals in 19 seconds from Lubomir Visnovsky and Sheldon Souray, cutting the deficit to one, which was as close as they would ever get to the defending champs.
The Red Wings top-ranked power play -- now rolling along at a 34.2% clip -- was again the difference, as they went 3-for-5 with the man-advantage. Get the memo out across the league: don't take penalties against Detroit.
