DISD Tops State's ‘Bad List'

Dallas has 52 campuses make the state's worst schools list.

The Dallas Independent School District is atop a new list -- but it's not one educators want to brag about.

The Texas Education Agency released its list of worst schools in the state on Thursday and the Dallas ISD was heavily represented with 52 schools.

In all, 24 elementary schools, 11 middle schools and 17 high schools made the list.  To see the list of Dallas' failing schools, click here.  To see a list of all Texas schools, click here.

In fact, Dallas had more schools on the list than any other district in the state -- just beating Houston ISD by one campus. The good news, however, is that this year's number on the worst list is lower than last year when 74 campuses were recognized.

Schools make the worst list by having 50 percent or less of the students passing any reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, or science TAKS test in any two of the three years : 2006, 2007 and 2008 or the school was rated Academically Unacceptable in 2006, 2007 or 2008.

Other ISDs across the Metroplex fared a little better.  Fort Worth ISD had 24 schools make the list, Arlington had five and Grand Prairie only four.

State-wide about 8 percent of Texas' public schools are on this year's worst list.
