What Retail Apocalypse? Plano-based At Home to Open 3 New D-FW Stores

Plano-based home furnishings retailer At Home's rapid expansion to new markets includes a detour this year back to its hometown. At Home will open three new local stores -- in Frisco, Garland and Mansfield -- by early fall, said CEO Lee Bird, who also explained in an interview how the retailer can grow its store base 20 percent a year without wrecking its finances. All three stores are ground-up new construction for the retailer that's known for saving money by taking over big boxes that other retailers have closed. "We know our own market and sometimes, in the high growth areas, there aren't the second generation boxes we would want," Bird said. "With 150,000 people moving here a year, there are a lot of vibrant retail areas in D-FW."At Home stores under construction are in:-- Plano at the Frisco border on the south side of State Highway 121 between Preston Road and Parkwood Blvd., next to The Container Store and across from Ikea and down the road from Nebraska Furniture Mart in the West Plano-Legacy area. (98,000 square feet)-- Garland at the southeast corner of President George Bush Turnpike and Firewheel Parkway. It's across from Firewheel Town Center and Lowe's and Best Buy filling in more of the North Garland shopping district. (108,000 square feet)-- Mansfield at the northeast corner of U.S. 287 and East Broad Street where the first phase of The Shops at Broad is under construction.
