Veteran's Day Puts a Spotlight on Thousands of Jobs Available and Small Business Loans for Ex-military

More than a million military service members will enter the private sector nationwide over the next five years. And in Texas, there are almost a million veterans who are of working age. Employers and lenders are paying attention. The Texas Workforce Commission is holding its six annual statewide "Hiring Red, White & You!" job fair on Thursday, Nov. 9.Separately, J.P. Morgan Chase has given a $4.2 million grant to non-profit lenders in major states with the largest veteran populations, including PeopleFund, a non-profit lender in Texas. The funds are being shared with other non-profit groups in California, Florida and North Carolina and South Carolina that help veterans start new businesses.In Texas, veterans can apply for small business funds at peoplefund.org/loans.The Workforce Commission's annual job fair has been successful putting employers together with veterans. Last year, more than 16,000 veterans and 2,000 employers attended. In five years, the program has connected more than 58,000 veterans with more than 8,400 employers. The commission estimates that there are more than 927,000 veterans in Texas are eligible to work. Events are being held in 29 locations around the state.
