Spring break has only just begun and already an elaborate sandcastle has been destroyed at South Padre Island. Four males are suspected in connection with "major damage" done early Friday to a sandcastle in front of the city's visitor center. One of the four also climbed a flagpole and took the South Padre Island flag, police said. The damages are worth an estimated $24,000, police said. The sandcastle featured 2018 "Welcome" and "Happy Easter" greetings, along with sand renderings of structures and animals. The city is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved.
