Two Oak Cliff Art Galleries Team Up for Tandem Exhibition ‘In Memory'

Thursday at 4 p.m. is a weird time for a gallery opening. But it makes sense for Cydonia, a tiny art venue on the second floor of the Texas Theatre, and nearby Mercado369, a gallery, showroom and bar specializing in Latin American art. Although the two Oak Cliff entities typically keep very different hours and have different missions, they've recently synchronized their schedules to present a new show together called "In Memory." The jointly hosted exhibition, which is now on view, features works by Polish artist Alicja Bielawska, as well as ceramics from the Mata Ortiz tradition that thrives in Chihuahua, Mexico. Bielawska has exhibited frequently with Cydonia since 2015, showing off artworks that have included eye-poppingly colorful large-scale installations and sculpture. In Cydonia's current space, however, a small venue dubbed the Safe Room, Bielawska's new two-dimensional pen, ink and collage works are more understated.   Continue reading...
