Two Killed in San Antonio as Home Burns in Standoff

Two men are dead and two homes went up in flames after an assault on a woman led to a standoff that ensnared a neighbor Tuesday afternoon in San Antonio.According to San Antonio police, a woman fled her home in the city's south side around 4 p.m. after her husband started beating her."He beat her up very, very severely," San Antonio Police Chief William McManus told the San Antonio Express-News. Her escape led her to a neighbor's home, the Express-News reported. Meanwhile, her husband grabbed a rifle and started shooting at her.A man who emerged from the home the woman had fled to was then shot and moved out of the line of fire by police officers so he could be treated, according to the newspaper. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect's wife had been severely injured but wasn't shot, police said.As officers closed in, the suspect set fire to his home, crouched down on the porch and began shooting again."SWAT eventually arrived on scene and they felt that [the suspect] was a threat and they fired a couple of rounds at him," McManus said in the Express-News. "He did not move when he was shot."The suspect died as his home burned, but it is unclear if he was shot or perished in the flames, the Express-News reported. The fire quickly spread to a second home, according to San Antonio television station KSAT, and firefighters sprayed water on a third residence in an effort to keep flames from spreading further.High winds hindered firefighting efforts, but a vacant lot nearby kept the fire from being worse, San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood told KSAT.Firefighters saved two dogs that were in the suspect's home, the Express-News reported.  Continue reading...
