Trump Taps ex-Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison for NATO Ambassador

This is a developing story.WASHINGTON -- President Donald Trump on Thursday nominated former Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison for ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, elevating the longtime Texas lawmaker to a key diplomacy role in his administration.The announcement closed months of speculation that Trump was eyeing Hutchison, who represented Texas in the Senate from 1993 to 2013, for the job.Hutchison will face the difficult task of balancing America’s longtime commitment to the military alliance, which was formed in 1949, with Trump’s thorny relationship with other member countries.The president has often criticized NATO allies for depending on the U.S. military for defense, arguing that other countries in the 29-member group are not paying their fair share.  Continue reading...
