The Colony Sailor Among the Survivors of the Deadly USS Fitzgerald Collision That Killed 7

A 25-year-old sailor from The Colony narrowly survived when the destroyer he was aboard collided last week with a Philippine-flagged container ship. Seven people were killed early Saturday when the ACX Crystal rammed into the right side of the the USS Fitzgerald off the coast of Japan. Liz Luna's daughter came across a picture of the damaged ship and showed it to her mother. Her son, Petty Officer Second Class Joshua Tapia, had been aboard, WFAA-TV (Channel 8) reported. "The caption said something about it colliding, but I still thought 'Oh, I'm sure it's no big deal," Luna said. She sent her son a text asking if he was all right, but hours passed before she heard back. "He responded almost three hours after I messaged him and he just said 'I'm okay,'" she told the station.
