Texas Officer Fatally Shoots Sword-wielding Man

Officers fatally shot a man who was reportedly wielding a sword while they served a warrant early Tuesday at a League City home. The League City Police Combined Agency Response Team was serving a search warrant about 5 a.m. in the 300 block of Morningside Drive when the shooting occurred. An officer went into a bedroom and was confronted by Roger Fortner who assumed a defensive stance with a sword, Galveston County Sheriff Henry Trochesset told the Associated Press. The officer was shot with a bean bag, but it did not subdue him. Another officer then fired at him several times with a rifle, Trochesset said.Fortner, 49, was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported. It's unclear how many of the shots struck Fortner. His wife and stepson, who was the subject of the narcotics and weapons warrant, were in the house at the time, the Houston Chronicle reported. It was not clear if the stepson was charged with any crime in connection to the warrant. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, which is routine in shootings involving police. The sheriff's office is investigating the shooting. League City is about 26 miles southeast of Houston and 27 miles northwest of Galveston.   Continue reading...
