Texans Deserve Better Than What They’re Getting at DPS Driver’s License Centers

Here’s hoping you don’t have to get your driver’s license renewed anytime soon.Because despite adding dozens of employees to its mega centers last year and getting millions of additional state dollars to fill vacancies, the Department of Public Safety still can’t figure out how to reduce hourslong wait times for customers.We join Flower Mound Republican Sen. Jane Nelson in her frustration that these problems persist despite lawmakers approving $212 million to fix them. She’s rightfully called out Col. Steven McCraw, DPS executive director, to right this ship. Even Gov. Greg Abbott has repeatedly decried the poor service.There’s something terribly wrong with this operation. DPS owes us all an explanation about why it can’t get its act together.Thankfully, the clock is ticking. Either DPS proves that it deserves to keep operating these license centers or the state has threatened to turn them over to some other agency to run them. It may be time to give someone else a try. It can’t get much worse. DPS is not making a good case for itself.Sadly, we’ve all become accustomed to the snail’s pace of government improvements. But these are basic services that Texans should expect to go smoothly. Surely, getting a basic document shouldn’t take hours out of your day.We deserve better than this.  Continue reading...
