Teenage Mother Charged With Murder of Baby Found in Carrollton Cemetery Flowerpot

A Dallas teen who came forward as the mother of a baby girl found buried in a flowerpot in a Carrollton cemetery has been charged with capital murder in the child's death.Jazmin Lopez, 18, told police she'd been trying for months to have an abortion without her family's knowledge. None of her relatives knew she was pregnant, according to an arrest-warrant affidavit.Lopez gave birth in the bathroom of her home Feb. 4, she told police. She said in March that she had passed out after the delivery and that her daughter, who she named Kailen Lopez, was no longer breathing.Police say Lopez changed her story in April, after they'd found photographs of Kailen's body, conversations about abortion pills and searches for abortion clinics on her cellphone.In a second interview, Lopez said she'd wrapped the baby in a shirt, and covered her mouth with the fabric in case she cried. She said she held the infant to her body for one or two minutes, according to the affidavit.After the baby had died, Lopez and a friend bought flowers and a plastic pot from Home Depot and drove to Perry Cemetery, according to the affidavit. They put the flowerpot between two headstones, and made a cross with white rocks from a nearby driveway.A caretaker emptying the flowerpot found the body March 11 and called police. Lopez came forward March 29 after seeing media coverage of the discovery.Lopez remained in the Denton County jail Wednesday. Bail was set at $500,000.  Continue reading...
