TCU Graduate Stars in Tony Award Winning Musical ‘Beautiful' at Winspear

The Dallas Theater Center started it all, said actress Alison Whitehurst. "The DTC's Fortress of Solitude (in 2014) launched my career and moved me to New York City," she said in a phone interview. "It changed my life forever."Whitehurst, 29, now returns to Dallas starring as lyricist Cynthia Weil in Beautiful, a Tony Award-winning musical about songwriter Carole King. Whitehurst raves about meeting King, who's "so joyful, humble and always says it's about the love of music and not fame."Whitehurst's love of music started as a child growing up in Sugar Land. She honed her singing and acting skills at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth where she earned a degree in theater performance. "I loved it," she said. "It did wonders for me."She praises the North Texas theater community and has performed with Fort Worth's Circle Theatre and Casa Manana. After arriving in New York, Whitehurst did workshops for another musical and then got the call to audition for Beautiful. She was hired in January 2018 for the ensemble and as understudy for Weil. She moved from understudy to the Weil role in September. Dallas is the second to the last stop of her tour, which ends June 30. She's back where it all started. If you go:Beautiful runs from Tuesday through June 23 at the Winspear Opera House, 2403 Flora St. in Dallas. For tickets, 214-880-0202 or visit attpac.org.  Continue reading...
