Tarleton Student Shot in Face Was a Case of ‘mistaken Identity' in Dispute Over Drugs, Police Say

Police have arrested the man who they say is responsible for shooting a Tarleton State University student in the face in a case of "mistaken identity."Shawn Patrick Layton, 26, was arrested Thursday and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, as well as two drug charges. He remains in Erath County Jail Friday with a combined bond of $805,000.Police say Layton shot student Jamie Richards, 19, in the face Sunday evening as a result of "mistaken identity over drug-related issues," the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.Stephenville police initially responded to the Oak Tree Apartments at 9:55 p.m. after a report of a shot fired at the complex.When officers arrived, they searched the outside of the complex but didn't find anything.Another call came in at 1:18 a.m. after a neighbor heard cries for help. Police found Richards suffering from a gunshot wound to the face in her apartment.
