Student at Hunt County High School Stirs Outrage With Confederate Flag Cape

A Confederate flag is roiling a North Texas school district after a Royse City student wore one to class recently.The issue has inflamed residents and activists and has led to at least one other racist incident when students in an SUV leaving campus shouted "white power" and were caught on video, according to WFAA-TV (Channel 8).Royse City Superintendent Kevin Worthy said the flag has been confiscated and the student "received consequences in accordance with board policy," he wrote in a letter quoted in the Royse City Herald Banner.As for the students who shouted the racist slogan, "Identification of the subject(s) is underway and discipline, if at all possible, for this off campus action will occur," the letter stated.The student wore the flag around his neck like a cape on a late April school day on the Hunt County campus, according to WFAA."Right now, Royse City just took a step back 100 years, because they let that boy walk down there like Superman with a cape around these kids," said Eric Price, whose son attends the school. "And they could do nothing."Worthy said appropriate actions will be taken."Racism in any form is disgusting, abhorrent and embarrassing for myself, the school board and this school district," his letter stated. "We are going to work together with all of our community to ensure that racism isn't condoned, accepted or tolerated in any form."  Continue reading...
