Sherin Mathews Buried in Private, Undisclosed Funeral After ‘threats of Grave Desecration'

Sherin Mathews was buried Tuesday in a private ceremony more than a week after her body was found in a culvert, according to Sini Mathew's attorney Mitchell Notle.In a statement released on behalf of Sherin's family, Nolte said the 3-year-old's funeral took place at an undisclosed location, "because of personal security concerns and threats of grave desecration."Despite a community petition asking for permission to perform a public interfaith burial, the ceremony was private, he said, citing the "intense press and social media attention" the case has drawn. Her funeral was, "conducted according to the religious beliefs and the cultural heritage of her family," the statement said.Sherin had been missing since Oct. 7 when her body was discovered last week about a mile from her Richardson. Her father, Wesley Mathews, initially told police the girl vanished after he sent her outside in the middle of the night as a punishment. He later changed his story to say he was "physically assisting" her in drinking milk when she choked and died.
