Court hears arguments on whether to block 'sanctuary cities' banBy James BarragánIn a packed courtroom with hundreds of people protesting outside, a phalanx of lawyers argued for the first time Monday over Texas' newly passed sanctuary cities ban and whether a federal district court should temporarily block it.The plaintiffs in the case -- civil rights organizations and Latino and immigrants rights groups, along with some counties and the state's major cities -- say the law violates the Constitution and should be halted before causing them irreparable harm.But attorneys for the state argued that provisions in the law have been ruled constitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court and do not amount to racial profiling, as the plaintiffs alleged.Previously: Gov.
