The Texas Rangers plan to formally announce Thursday the name of the architectural firm the team has picked to design its new retractable-roof stadium. The 11 a.m. news conference to make the announcement will take place at Globe Life Park -- the Rangers current 23-year-old home that will be replaced by the new stadium. Arlington residents approved the $500 million referendum for the new ball field on Nov. 8 in a landslide vote.Rangers officials were mum Wednesday on which firm will design the $1 billion stadium -- $500 million of which will come from taxpayers -- but Sports Business Journal reported in a Nov. 14 story that Dallas-based HKS Inc. is the choice. Previously, Rangers officials' comments on the design firm have been limited to saying only that the club wanted the architect in place by the end of 2016 to help ensure a 2020 opening for the stadium.HKS has a long history with the Rangers and the city of Arlington. The firm was the architect of record for Globe Life Park as well as AT&T Stadium, the nearby home of the Dallas Cowboys.HKS donated $25,000 to the pro-stadium campaign in Oct. 31, 2016, according to campaign finance reports. Populous, another architectural firm, provided preliminary sketches for the new park and the Texas Live mixed-use development that will accompany it.Construction on the new stadium, which will be built next to Globe Life Park, is expected to start this summer.
