Melchior Chladek, Budapest-born Priest, Founder of Cistercian Monastery and School, Dies at 85

The Rev. Melchior Istvan Chladek had a passion for medicine that he shared with his biology students during his career at Cistercian Preparatory School in Irving.In retirement, he applied that same enthusiasm a chaplain at the former Carswell Air Force Base Hospital in Fort Worth.Born in Budapest, he was the last surviving member of the Hungarian Cistercians who founded Cistercian Monastery Our Lady of Dallas.Chladek, 85, died June 14 of complications of congestive heart failure at a Dallas nursing home.A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Cistercian Abbey Church, 3550 Cistercian Road in Irving.
