Man Faces Murder Charge After He Ran Down Bicyclist Over Stolen Gun, Then Beat Him, Dallas Police Say

A Dallas man faces a murder charge after police say he ran down a man on a bicycle in Pleasant Grove last month over a stolen gun, then hit him repeatedly with a piece of wood.Jose Carmona, 28, was booked into the Dallas County jail late Wednesday. According to an arrest-warrant affidavit, Carmona's girlfriend told him that another man had taken a 9 mm Hi-Point handgun from his home in the 9400 block of Kerrville Street, near Scyene Road and North St. Augustine Drive, the afternoon of July 18.Carmona later told police he was upset and wanted the gun back, so he and his girlfriend got in his red company pickup and gave chase as the other man, 22-year-old Derek Portillo, fled on a bicycle, the affidavit says.He and the girlfriend both said that Portillo may have fired two shots at them, and he said he ducked down in his seat, accelerated and swerved, striking Portillo, according to the affidavit.  Continue reading...
