Man Caught on Video Fatally Stabbing Another Outside Family Dollar in Old East Dallas

A man was caught on video fatally stabbing another outside a Family Dollar in Old East Dallas Tuesday afternoon, police said. The incident happened in the 4300 block of Live Oak Street, near North Peak Street, about 5:30 p.m., according to an arrest warrant. Authorities found 56-year-old Sergio Benavides lying in the parking lot with a stab wound, police said. He was transported to a hospital, where he died. Officers later arrested 48-year-old Patrick Washington. A man wearing a red baseball cap with white markings and a backpack could be seen in footage pushing a red shopping cart before stabbing Benavides, the arrest warrant states. After getting the surveillance footage, officers received a bulletin about the man. An officer found Washington, who matched the description, sitting behind El Rancho Supermarket wearing a red hat, backpack and pushing a red shopping cart. When the officers searched Washington's bag, they found what appeared to be blood on the inside flap and smeared blood and droplets on a book. There was an unmarked pill bottle with different pills, including six Xanax. The officers also found what appeared to be blood splatter on a white plastic bag at the bottom of the shopping cart. During an interview at Dallas Police Headquarters, Washington denied being in the area where the stabbing occurred, but confirmed that he was wearing a red hat, backpack and pushing a red shopping cart, the warrant states. He told officers that nobody else uses his backpack and anything inside was his. Washington was booked into jail on charges of murder, possession and resisting arrest.  Continue reading...
