Kidnapper Who Bought Bleach Used in Deadly 8-hour Torture Session Gets 45 Years in Prison

A 40-year-old man was sentenced to 45 years in prison for his role in the kidnapping of a father of six who was tortured for hours. Ricky Moya Moreno was convicted of aggravated kidnapping last week in the death of 28-year-old Jonathan Paul Gutierrez.Moreno was sentenced Tuesday for his crime, with a $10,000 fine tacked on to his prison term.Gutierrez, 28, was held captive for nearly eight hours. During that time he was pistol-whipped, beaten with a baseball bat and stabbed and had bleach poured over his face. Moreno's defense attorneys Brad Lollar and Elizabeth Berry argued that Moreno was afraid of the mastermind behind Gutierrez's attack. After he was sentenced, Moreno asked if he could say something to Gutierrez's family. They declined to hear what he had to say before he was taken away by bailiffs.Moreno has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. His father was killed, and he and his niece were badly beaten during a home invasion robbery in May 2012. Prosecutors Sean Colston and Scott Wells argued that Moreno's victimization didn't excuse his behavior the day of July 1, 2016, when Gutierrez was brutally beaten. "I'm sorry for what Mr. Moreno and his family went through in 2012, but that doesn't excuse his conduct in 2016," Colston argued. Moreno's attorneys said he was afraid of Martin Armijo Jr., 35, who is charged with capital murder in Gutierrez's slaying.   Continue reading...
