Jowanda Jordan, Noted Dallas Choral Director, Dies at 80

Jowanda Elaine Jackson Jordan sang, taught, directed and composed music.During the bulk of her 34-year career with the Dallas school district, she directed award-winning choirs at South Oak Cliff High School.She combined her Christian spirit and musical passion to lead a number of church choirs. She also was musical director of the South Dallas Concert Choir, dedicated to the preservation and performance of the Negro spiritual as an American art form.Jordan died June 21 of congestive heart failure while in hospice care at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-Carrollton. She turned 80 the day before.A celebration of Jordan's life will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Friendship-West Baptist Church, 2020 W. Wheatland Road in Dallas.
