John Wiley Price Trial: Follow Opening Statements Live

First, a juror was hospitalized. Next, the reading of the indictment took up an entire day Thursday. Then, a juror had to help her mother with a health issue on Friday. Opening statements are now set for 8:30 a.m. Monday in Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price's long-anticipated corruption trial. Both the prosecution and the defense will have two hours each to lay out their cases. Prosecutors will begin, painting Price as a greedy politician who sold his office, taking nearly $1 million in bribes in exchange for helping businesses who were seeking county contracts or other approvals. The feds allege that Price took the money from his friend Kathy Nealy, who was being paid by the firms as a political consultant. Also standing trial with Price is his longtime assistant, Dapheny Fain, who is accused of helping Price hide his illicit income.Defense attorneys will then have a chance to argue their side -- that Price has helped the community and that the payments between him, Fain and Nealy were legal transactions between business partners.Dallas' dirty politics and racial strife are sure to feature prominently in the trial. Four African-Americans are among the 12 jurors and three alternates.
