Jan Dickson, 77, Taught English in Irving Schools, Was Tireless Education Advocate

Jan Wood Dickson related to eighth-grade English students and made them the focus of her teaching career.While her more than 40 years in teaching included classroom stints in New Mexico, California and Kansas, Dickson found her professional home when she started at what is now Crockett Middle School in Irving.After retiring from the classroom in 2000, Dickson remained active in education as a full-time district liaison with the Irving Schools Foundation. She was also an advocate for children and schools through The Dallas Morning News by writing letters to the editor and serving as Voices volunteer columnist.Dickson died at Brookdale, a senior living center in Plano, on May 12, her 77th birthday. She never fully recovered from complications of a 2008 fall, her family said.A private memorial is planned for the near future.  Continue reading...
