Irving City Council Race Headed to June 16 Runoff After Ineligible Candidate Remained on the Ballot

Hundreds of Irving voters went to the polls May 5 to vote for one of three candidates seeking the City Council's Place 6 seat. Only two of the candidates were eligible to run. Shamima Mondal, 58, had been deemed ineligible to run for the northern Irving seat in March after an opposing candidate, Albert Zapanta, challenged her petition for candidacy. Records obtained by The Dallas Morning News show that Irving City Secretary Shanae Jennings could only verify 17 of 38 signatures on Mondal's petition.
