Inquiries Into Jordan Edwards' Killing Must Explore Question of Bias Among Balch Springs Police

In some important ways, the official handling of the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Jordan Edwards by a white police officer in Balch Springs has been reassuring.Rather than simply suspend Officer Roy Oliver, the 37-year-old Iraq combat veteran who killed Edwards, Balch Springs Police Chief Jonathan Haber fired him within three days. Most importantly, Dallas County prosecutors and the sheriff's office are investigating the death to see whether Oliver should be charged with a crime.Those are good first steps.
