When Texas lawmakers debated whether to restrict transgender people's ability to use the bathroom that matches their gender identity, opponents credited the Lone Star State's big corporations with ultimately derailing a move that they said could have cost the state millions of dollars in business and tourism revenue. The Human Rights Campaign, a group that advocates for LGBTQ rights, recently found that record numbers of companies are taking steps to protect LGBTQ workers. Its 2018 Corporate Equality Index gives companies a score out of 100 based on criteria including whether their human resources policies include specific nondiscrimination provisions for LGBTQ workers, whether benefits are available to same-sex couples and whether medical coverage includes transition-related care for transgender employees.
