Gov. Abbott's Special Session Could Be the Priciest in a Decade

AUSTIN — The special session that Gov. Greg Abbott has scheduled for July could be the most expensive such gathering of lawmakers in more than a decade.Abbott this week told lawmakers to be back in Austin on July 18 for a special legislative session to finish business left undone in the regular session that ended Memorial Day. If it takes legislators 30 days to complete the monster agenda Abbott has laid out, it will cost Texas taxpayers more than $1 million. The price tag, which doesn't include overhead such as printing and utilities, soared because the Texas Ethics Commission gave lawmakers a hefty increase in their daily pay two years ago. The session in July will be the first special legislative session under the increased pay rate, and it could cost taxpayers 26 percent more than the most recent special session in 2013.   Continue reading...
