Flashback: Texas Women Gained Equal Rights in 1972 Election

Editor's note: Take a look back in The Dallas Morning News archives.On Nov. 7, 1972, Texas passed The Texas Equal Rights Amendment, or Proposition 7, which granted equal rights to Texas women under the law. The amendment, however, was first introduced to the Texas Senate in 1959 by Dallas attorney Hermine D. Tobolowsky.Tobolowsky began politically advocating for women's rights in 1957 by proposing an amendment that would allow women to control property independently. She was the vice-president of the Dallas Business and Professional Women's Club and often held luncheons, meetings and other events to help pass the legislation.  Continue reading...
