Flashback: Dallasites Tuned in to First TV Programs in 1948

Editor's note: Take a look back into the archives of The Dallas Morning News.On Sept. 27, 1948, the D-FW area was getting ready for the television event of the year. The program itself wasn't the draw; it was the medium of television itself that had everyone excited. That evening, WBAP-TV Fort Worth broadcast live coverage of President Harry Truman's visit to Fort Worth — the first-ever telecast south of St. Louis. Enterprising shopkeepers invited customers to "see for themselves" by hosting public viewings of the program. Despite assurances that Dallasites should be able to watch the program "with proper antenna installation," not everyone was impressed with the reception.
