Flashback: Apple Computer's Macintosh Took on IBM Armed With a Mouse

Editor's Note: Take a look back into the archives of The Dallas Morning News.On Jan. 24, 1984, Apple Computer Inc. took on then-Goliath IBM with the release of the Macintosh home computer. As software companies worked to make their products compatible with IBM's PC, Apple took what many called an "awesome risk:" They developed a machine that had nothing in common with the industry leader.Apple advertised the computer as an alternative to the perceived conformity within the computer industry, with an ad campaign filled with references to George Orwell's 1984.
